Country Report: Philippines Essay -- essays research papers fc
à à à à à Improving conditions for the entire world may seem like a daunting task. It may be more beneficial to look at a single piece of the puzzle and its experience of improving conditions. Narrowing the field of study to a single country allows for a more detailed analysis of the path taken to achieve improved conditions for the single country. Improving the conditions of a country through a process of change is called development. Measuring development in a single country allows us to understand some of the policy, historical trends and natural conditions that are better for development. By looking at the Philippines background, recent political and economic issues, and the economic performance of the past and perspective future, a better understanding of development will be achieved. à à à à à The Philippines became known to the western world in the early 1500ââ¬â¢s with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan. In 1565 Spain officially colonized the area under Miguel Lopez. Spain controlled the area for over 300 years before, with the help of America, Spanish control was lost and an American-Philippine joint rule occurred. The colonial system had two major influences on the path of development that the Philippines took. The manorial system set up by Spanish colonialists brought a strong divide in the wealth of the country that is still seen today and the religious influence of the Roman Catholic Church makes the Philippines the only country in Asia that is predominately Christian. Over ninety percent of the population is Roman Catholic or Protestant (ACTD Berkly). These influences took the development path through a constant fight of poverty and western ideas. à à à à à The isolation provided by a mountainous terrain and an island country was used by the United States to keep influence on the area until occupation during World War II. After the defeat of Japan, the Philippines gained their independence on July 4th, 1946. The country experienced dictatorial rule until President Marcos was ousted in a snap election held in the beginning of 1987. Soon after, the Constitution was written and ratified on February 11th, 1987 (CIA Philippines). This point marks the beginning of an important institutional strength in the form of democratic rule. Hester Prynne Essay -- essays research papers
Hester Prynne à à à à à Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, a dark tale of sin and redemption, centers around the small Puritan community of Boston during the 17th century. In the midst of this small community is Hester Prynne. She is a woman that has defied the Puritans, taken the consequences and in the end conformed with the Puritans. It did, however, take great effort to settle down and become a women of honor again. à à à à à Hester Prynne, through the eyes of the Puritans, is an extreme sinner. She has gone against the Puritan ways by committing Adultery. The Puritans believed that Hester was a lost soul that could only be saved by sincere and thorough repentance. For this irrevocably harsh sin, she must wear a symbol of shame for the rest of her life. à à à à à From the beginning, we see that Hester Prynne is a young and beautiful woman who has bought a child into the world with an unknown father. Hester, to the reader, is obviously a woman who has violated a strict social and religious code, but who has sinned in an affirmation of love and life. The Puritans do not take her feelings into account. They are people that take things as being right or wrong. Committing adultery is seen as wrong in the Bible, and therefore Puritans do not care of the circumstances. The Puritans are grim, forbidding people. Nonetheless they have a degree of dignity and authority. They lack sympathy and discrimination. In their eyes all crimes are equal. à à à à à Hester is punished by the Puritan society by wearing the scarlet letter A on the bosom of her dress and standing on “the weather darkened scaffold';(p.234) for three hours. The Scaffold is a painful task to bear. The townspeople have gathered around to gossip and stare at her. They yell horrid things at her. One matron screams “At the very least, they should have put the brand of hot iron to her forehead.'; (p.59) Obviously, the Puritans did not believe that this punishment was cruel enough. The screams of this matron showed just how unforgiving the Puritans were. Here one can see the difference between the Puritans and Hester. She was standing on scaffold shedding her honor because she had sinned in love. Although she had committed a sin, the reasons behind it were because she was truly in love. T... ...athe the ways of her child. à à à à à As time went by, Hester came more in contact with the Puritans of the town. She had come to conform with their belief that redemption would save her soul. She gave her life to God, by visiting the sick and sowing for the poor. She came to be revered by most members of the community because of her actions. The scarlet letter, for many had come to represent able, not adultery. Her strength to satisfy the needs of others and comfort them was a gift many towns people respected. As time went by, Hester was no longer conforming to Puritan ways of redemption. She was doing kind things because it bought her pleasure and peace of mind. The word in the town was that the letter no longer stood for adultery and indeed stood for able. Hester became strong with the letter. She had let it be a part of her for many years while Pearl’s father, minister Dimesdale, had covered it and it had gnawed at his soul. Hester was no longer hurt by the letter neither did she feel guilt. à à à à à Hester Prynne had committed a sin which the Puritans believed took her soul. In the end, however, her sin had become part of her

Mother’s Role in Society
ROLE OF MOTHER IN SOCIETY ââ¬Å"Under the feet of oneââ¬â¢s mother, lies the Heaven. â⬠Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ââ¬Å"I remember my motherââ¬â¢s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life. â⬠Abraham Lincoln God created men and women to build life together and to complete one another all lifelong. Hence, Islam opened the door to women to wade through all the fields of struggle in life side by side with men, supporting each other, helping, and completing one another. Moreover, Islam did not separate them in roles, the thing that is clearly shown in Godââ¬â¢s saying {The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just and forbid what is evil. } (9:71). Once we understand that justice embraces everything positive in life, and that evil comprises everything negative in it, we will then realize that men and women are partners in building up life. And just like men are responsible of the society, women a lso are equally responsible of the society they live in.So, outside the framework of the specifically motherhood and fatherhood characteristics where they perform absolutely different functions, men and women have vast areas to conquer, building life shoulder to shoulder as human beings, equal in humanity. Accordingly, we can say that Islam had opened the door to women to enjoy life as a whole, in contrast to what some people may assume that it had tied them down in their characteristics as females. The sphere in which a woman can express her femininity is narrow to a certain extent, because it is restricted to her marital life where her role as a female is mainly revealed, and to her family and feminine milieu where she can show her feminine traits through wearing ornaments or whateverâ⬠¦ not to mention motherhood that is the most important feminine role that a woman fulfills. But motherhood itself is not purely a feminine role; all the more so it is a human role in a womanâ⬠â¢s life. Thus, the role of a woman as a human being remains her most essential role in life. She must confirm, in her actions, that she is a person of reason, a person of will, a person of affection, and a person who has a mission to carry out and she should prove that she has the ability to take part in life. So, womenââ¬â¢s humanity is the most important aspect in their personality because it is the aspect that symbolizes the aim God (S. W. T) created them to achieve in this world. He created women to contribute to the existence with the faculties they have, just as He created men to contribute to the existence with the abilities they possess. Therefore, we believe that, while the feminine aspect of the womanââ¬â¢s personality is revealed in a delimited sphere, her human aspect is manifested in her whole existence as a woman. Even more, the human aspect of her personality will indeed be integrated with the feminine aspect of her conduct as a female, whether with her husband or within her own specific sensations of femininity. Verily, the aspect of humanity in her will enrich that conduct turning it into a nobler one, and will expand her giving to the partner that she joins in marriage.Every society is made up of blocks of family units. The stronger each block is, the stronger the structure of the society. Families are thus the building blocks, upon which rests the fate of society. For the development of good families, the mother plays a vital role. Many women today have aspirations of progress in their careers, and degrees in various fields. However it is indisputable that the most important achievement of a mother is the raising of sensible, virtuous children who will then move on to build other strong blocks for society. It has been said that it is easy to bear children but it is difficult to raise them well. In that lies the challenge for all women who are mothers. Mother is, likely, one of those few words whose very cite inspires a fountain of emoti ons in the heart of almost every person. As very well said by a wise man, the mother's lap is the first school for every child. Mother is every man's primary wealth. Women are the creator and destroyer of society. Women can make a family, thus making the society a heaven by removing the wrongs and evils from the society. Our society views motherhood as something very special. Mothers should provide security and stability for their children. An ideal mother must sacrifice many of her own wants and desires for the benefit of her child and should teach him/her the ethics of being a good citizen. An ideal mother tries her best to carry out the goal to make her home a paradise for her children. A Muslim mother has a valued and dignified role. Her contribution is acknowledged and appreciated. Her unparalleled gifts to the child have been aptly described by Imam Zaynul `Abidin (a) in Risalatul Huqooq ââ¬â The Chapter of Rights. It is the right of your mother that you should appreciate t hat she carried you [in her womb] the way nobody carries anybody. She fed you the fruits of her heart which nobody feeds anybody. She protected you [during pregnancy] with her ears, eyes, hands, legs, hair, limbs, [in short] with her whole being, gladly, cheerfully, and carefully; suffering patiently all the worries, pains, difficulties, and sorrows till the hand of God removed you from her and brought you into this world. Then she was most happy, feeding you forgetting her own hunger, clothing you even if she herself had no clothes, giving you milk and water not caring for her own thirst, keeping you in the shade, even if she had to suffer from the heat of the sun, giving you every comfort with her own hardships; lulling you to sleep while keeping herself awake. â⬠The foundation of the family is laid with the decision to marry, and the importance of the mother is evident in Islamic teachings beginning with marriage, conception and then child rearing. As times change, mothers ch ange to meet the new roles that they are expected to play. Gone are the days where most mothers just cared for the family and the home. Mothers today are a lot of things to a lot of people. Mothers still have to fill the mother role, but it is not felt that they are the only ones responsible for rearing the family. What is a mother? It is now harder than ever to answer that question. The role of the mother is infinitely complex. Take any street in any town and ask a mother how they would define their role. All the answers will be different and significantly so. The changing role of mother today includes career issues, responsibility for total home care, education of children, healthy life styles for family, and there is more focus on mother as a person with needs of her own. You didnââ¬â¢t disagree with mom on issues of life styles and how to care for the home. The problem with the role of mothers then and the role they now have is the need to feel that they had to be all things t o all people.Today mothers are not afraid to say what is on their mind and someone think they are not a good wife or mother. The changing role of mothers should not be seen as a bad change, but one that promotes healthy happier life styles for all family members. Mothers will always fill the role of mother, no matter how many changes in life occur. Families today are just realizing the importance of all the roles mothers have played in the past and how her role is changing for the better.Women can change the societyââ¬â¢s lookout and so they are only responsible for its upliftment or downfall. We all are greatly influenced by our Mothers. She remains a great reservoir of inspiration for all of us throughout our lives. Mothers not only inspire and make us good human beings but also bring smile on our faces. Motherââ¬â¢s value as a role model and keeper is undeniable. There is no substitute to mother for a baby. Mother plays a keystone role in bringing up newborn. Motherââ¬â¢ s role is not limited to newborns only.Mothers have to play a lively role even after their babies are grown up regardless of their age. In most of the Asian countries, mother is considered as symbol of strength and integrity and binding force for a family. Mother also plays a critical role in career building of her child, as mother best knows the capabilities, strengths and weaknesses in her kid and can better guide her child to choose the right profession. As mothers, are the one who mould their children into bright, beautiful, pure and strong itizens, we assign a special place to women in the society. It is therefore all the more important that the girls who are studying presently, should train themselves in such a way that they can live up to the ideals and aspirations of future woman. In conclusion, if we want a good society, first of all we have to look for a good mother, as a mother is not only a school, but she is also the life, origin of human. FIRDOUS AHMAD DAR _ myfirm. What Gives Us More Satisfaction: the Pursuit of Our Desires?
What gives us more satisfaction: the pursuit of our desires or the attainment of them? People have diverse definitions of happiness. Psychologists relate happiness to emotions and feelings of gratification. Economists define happiness in terms of wealth of individuals. Some people attribute happiness to attainment of desires. Some others believe that satisfaction lies in accepting the fact that human life is miserable and expectations just betray men. But where does real happiness and satisfaction lie?Although attainment is the objective of every pursuit and sense of accomplishment is an ingredient for further progress but still desires and destinations donââ¬â¢t completely satisfy humans yet it is the pursuit which instills a positive attitude towards life and struggle, makes the process enjoyable, it explores ones capabilities and eventually enables humans to transcend from petty pleasures to the higher purposes of their life. Happiness is not something to be derived from achiev ements as such; rather it comes after the pursuer who knuckles down for his desires. The proponents of attainment of desires say that achievement of desires, the motive of every pursuit, is the only way to happiness. They support their claim by saying that achievement is the final point of all human actions done in regard to pursuit of particular desire and outcome is what determines happiness not the pursuit. They exemplify that people and nations who have attained more are better than those who have attained less. Some economists went so far to claim that GDP and GNP can also measure the happiness level of nation. However, supporters of this point of view fallaciously ascribe happiness and pleasure to attainment.Attainment does not necessarily give us happiness and contentment. Furthermore, the example that they cite to support their point is hardly persuasive. This can be proven by the recent study conducted by WHO on over 90000 citizens of various countries. The study found that affluent nations like France (21 percent), New Zealand (18. 2 percent) and the United States (19. 2 percent) had the highest depression rates and people are unsatisfied for their lives, while lower-income countries such as China (6. 5 percent) and Mexico (8 percent) had the lowest incidences of depression. This discontentment is ecause the man, who acquires things easily, cannot stay satisfied and contented for long. Pursuit is better than attainment in the sense that they keep a person alive and satisfied in his work and also synergize his desires in accordance to his pursuit and eventually give him a bigger reward. Sense of accomplishment no doubt comes with attainment of desires and tangible success. Humans feel confident when they have success. Their achievement brings a positive attitude, and proud feeling. Still it would be quite superficial to say that attainment can give a kind of lasting happiness. In fact accomplishment and the happiness associated with it are based little on the net outcome but the way we reach our outcome. Thomas Paine rightly says, ââ¬Å"The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightlyâ⬠(qtd. in Bogle 36). It is our pursuit and hard struggle that gives everything its meaning and contribute to human happiness. For instance, Sir Edmund Percival Hillary would have no charm in conquering Mount Everest if he could do it by an elevator; similarly there is no point in conquering moon and mars if humans could do it as easily as climbing on the roof of house. The greater the pursuit involved in any achievement the greater the charm, thrill and pleasure of doing it. Furthermore, it is human nature to want what we donââ¬â¢t have. Human brain values distant things very attractively and our imagination also magnifies the importance of that particular desire in our mind. We struggle for things but once achieved they lose their fervor. This is the time when the person who exclusively focuses on attainment realizes that human life is a wretched life and desires donââ¬â¢t satisfy us. These are mere illusions which keep us busy. However, the person who has struggled for the thing has enjoyed the whole pursuing process and he is satisfied because his struggle, irrespective of outcome, has proved his capabilities and hard work. Pursuit of goals provides humans with real pleasure by giving him bigger success. Pursuit is not only the struggle but it is a whole paradigm which can inspire a person to keep working hard to achieve his goal and redefine the new goals after the achievement. Pursuit oriented persons dream bigger in life and they are more idealistic in their approach.Itââ¬â¢s in fact the unending pursuit that bears the sweet fruit of extraordinary success and satisfaction. For instance, Alexander Fleming, Nobel laureate in medicine, never knew that he would win Nobel Prize. He even never aimed at discovering the Penicillin. He was just pursuing his inter est of studying microorganisms with devotion. The discovery of Penicillin, the noble prize and the title ââ¬ËFather of Biologyââ¬â¢ were the by-products of his pursuit (Sir Alexander Fleming ââ¬â Biography). Another point illustrating importance of pursuits is that pursuit has many gains in addition to the goal. It has content in itself. It is human nature that he finds himself satisfied in efforts towards his goals. ââ¬Å"The human animal, like others, is adapted to a certain amount of struggle for life, and when by means of great wealth homo sapiens can gratify all their whims without effort, the mere absence of effort from his life removes an essential ingredient of happinessâ⬠(Russell 30). Thus, people enjoy the hard work only when they are interested in pursuits rather than in desire. History shows various relevant examples, ââ¬Å"Louis Pasteur was so buried in his work on his wedding day that he entirely forgot the ceremony and had to be fetched by a friendâ⠬ (Avery).Similarly, John Nash, a great economist, found that his interests, fun and pleasure lie in Economics and its understanding. It is the pursuit which gives Stephen Hawking enough pleasure and happiness that despite of all his physical disabilities he is still living a contented, meaningful and productive life. Famous American philosopher and poet, Henry David Thoreau, says, ââ¬Å"Happiness is like a butterfly: the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulderâ⬠(qtd. n Brentar 36). An attainment oriented person always focuses on the upcoming excitement and pleasure because the purpose of his attainment is neither struggle nor pursuit. But do excitements and luxuries give us happiness? ââ¬Å"A life that is too full of excitement is actually an exhausting life in which continually stronger stimuli are needed to give the thrill that has come to be thought as an essential part of pleasureâ⬠(Russell 62). And a time comes when it becomes almost impossible for humans to satisfy themselves with attainment of desires and excitements. For instance, Maharaja Patiala in spite of having all the luxuries and attainments could not withstand boredom and died of unhappiness and discontentment (Collins and Lapierre). For a happy life it is necessary to pursue for desire, as pursuit is never ending and it also modifies your goals and desires. This brings us to conclude that all the extra ordinary successes have been made possible by the great pursuit undertaken by human beings.Pursuit by virtue of stretching the human capabilities beyond their limits, enriching human personality with positive attitude and by creating a balance in life provides us real imperishable happiness. A pursuer finds contentment, learning and development for him in every struggle irrespective of the result. On the other hand an attainment oriented person is more interested in net outcomes, therefore, he finds his happiness confined and diminishing. It is pursuit which makes human entity superior to his attainments and transcends his happiness beyond his desires.

However, according to Oberst, (2010) it has also been found out that high use of social media sites encourage negative feelings and behaviours among students and teenagers and result in negative behaviours such as procrastination, because they are always catching up with friends and they are more likely to be engaged in drugs and drinking. The purpose of this study will be to find out how the students are spending their time on these social networking sites. The study will also aim to find out how the use of these social sites are affecting the overall performance of students and what is the opinion of students on spending time on these social networking sites, especially face book. For the purpose of the study, research will be conducted among students of a university to fin d out their usage patterns opinion about Facebook. Problem Statement Facebook is one of the most popular social media sites which are used by the young population, especially students and teenagers, all over the world (Gerlich et al, 2011). With the ever increasing of the popularity of social media sites and students spending more and more time in Facebook, it has been regarded as the topmost reason for diverting the attention of students from academic work. According to some scholars, social media sites decrease the researching and learning capabilities of college students. The purpose of this study will be to find out how the students are spending their time on Facebook. The study will also aim to find out how the use of Facebook is affecting the overall performance of students and their opinion about spending time on Facebook. For the purpose of the study, research will be conducted among students of a university to find out their usage patterns opinion about Facebook. Literature Review There have been recent considerable discussions on the frequent use of social media tools such as Facebook, twitter, MySpace etc. by college and university students and the possible effect of these social media tools on the academic performances of these students (Connolly, 2011). E- Learning is a critical tool for learners, especially students. This medium of leaning has evolved with the growing number of its applications. Now young people use internet as a source of distributing information through social media sites. Connecting with people through social media sites started as a niche activity, but now it has become a phenomenon. Apart from being used for blogging, chatting and creating communities, these social media sites are used by many institutions to form online communities and groups. It was started as a hobby for some people but now it has become a compulsory social norm and a part of the daily life of people all over the world (Boyd, 2007). Young adults and teena gers are the special enthusiasts and they have found it a major medium to connect with their peers, reinvent their personalities, share information, and socialize. Personal Training in Chad Evermore ompany - Case Study Example These activities will make sure that there are stronger bones, long drive and more power. Cardiovascular evaluation such as step test and walk test should also be considered. Another important factor to consider in order to produce exemplary good performance is to create and stick to the training program. The latter should include some repetitions and exercises; specific needs that would help grow and maintain quality standards in terms of performance of the body and on the field. In addition, the creation of a periodized training program in weekly basis is important such as the one below: Nutrition is the basic or key to any fitness success. This therefore clearly tells us how important it is to uphold excellent nutrition by taking care of what the client takes into the body as food. There are some basic nutritional strategies and more so, food supplements that have been considered in the recent years to boost immune and general body health. This includes 3 meals a day and 2 smaller snacks in between. Multivitamin and fish oil is advantageous too (Walter & Meir,Ã 2003).
